Mercy and Gratitude

It's been a few years since I started meditating to try to pause the mental loops that run in my head non-stop, but this summer a big breakthrough happened. I read, My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, in it she writes, "On an intellectual level, I realized that I could monitor and shift my cognitive thoughts, but it never dawned on me that I had some say in how I perceived my emotions. No one told me that it only took ninety seconds for my biochemistry to capture, and then release me." My interaction with the mental loops came with heavy emotions, which kept me from breaking away from the hamster wheel of it all. Then, I read about the ninety seconds to break free, and something shifted. My goal was to sing, dance, or laugh long enough so that I could release myself from the loop, and it worked! Save The Last Laugh For Me...

My grandmother has been sickly and fragile for a few years--her feisty nature has helped defy death more than once. Grandma's sense of humor is a great layer to her complicated ways, and when I visit, we joke around to make light of the what's always on her mind--her mortality. Red-White-and-Blue Cocktail

Image
Recipe courtesy of Food Network Kitchen

Total Time: 10 min
Prep: 10 min
Level: Easy

Directions
Turn summer drinks into firecrackers by coating the glass rims with Pop Rocks. Just dampen with lemon juice, then dip the rims in the candies on a plate. To get the red-white-and-blue effect, use Tropical Punch (blue) Pop Rocks, then fill the glasses with any red drink or cocktail; we mixed pomegranate and cranberry juice with seltzer.
