Guy's Fourth of July Cocktail

Image
Recipe courtesy Guy Fieri for Food Network Magazine

Guy fills half a glass with cranberry juice mixed with watermelon schnapps and then carefully pours a tequila-blue curacao combo over the red layer. How patriotic! Once you start sipping, it's bound to turn purple, but it will still taste delicious.

Total: 10 min
Active: 10 min
Yield: 1 drink
Level: Easy

Ingredients
1 ounce watermelon schnapps
1 big splash cranberry juice
1 very thin slice jalapeno or serrano pepper
1 slice lemon
1 slice lime
1 1/2 ounces tequila
1/4 ounce blue curacao
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Watermelon wedge, for garnish (optional)

Directions
Mix the schnapps and cranberry juice in a shaker; pour into an ice-filled glass.

Muddle the jalapeno pepper, lemon and lime slices, tequila, blue curacao and simple syrup (to make a batch, dissolve sugar in equal parts hot water and chill) in the shaker. Slowly strain into the glass over the red layer. Garnish with watermelon, if desired.

It's Summertime! Live it up…

A friend posted photos of her family vacation to Spain on social media. Her posts of the three-week stay gave us a fantastic idea of what it was like to walk the streets of the towns she visited. She and her family covered lots of ground in that time. A week after her return, she posted pictures from New York, and a few people said, "What? You're on vacation again?" and "It must be nice to have so much money to travel so much." My friend tried to justify how she could take two vacations in such a short amount of time. I could see that she was feeling targeted by a few jealous commenters. I felt a little envious myself, but I couldn't punish her for being able to swing a big vacation, let alone two back to back. So, I commented, "Bravo! Live it up!"

And that was only the beginning because this summer-break turned out to be one with lots of big vacations for my friends! As it started to play out on my social media feed, I saw more and more backhanded…

“The most important thing I’ve learned is that what you do will never define you for long. Who you are always will.” -Abby WambachWolfpack

June buzzes with the energy of graduations and milestones being reached by children in our homes and/or communities. I was picking up lunch at a restaurant and saw a big group of people standing near a young woman wearing a graduation cap and flowers around her neck. The smiles and excitement were something great to see, but she seemed overwhelmed by the conversations. She was being bombarded with questions on why she picked the college she did, why that major, what’s next after freshman year, how will she afford to come home to visit? The usual questions of, “What do you want to do when you grow up, what’s next, and next after that?” reminded me of when I graduated from school. The same questions made me feel overwhelmingly rushed into the future but also pressured me to pick a career that would define my life well enough to fit into society’s mo…
